Preview: Band of Annuals
Monday night, indie alt. country heroes Band of Annuals will roll into town with whiskey-soaked melodies and a dust-blown aesthetic, representing a vanguard of young roots music musicians with crossover appeal. The curiously named quintet hail from Salt Lake City, like Iowa City, and town with a Mormon history. They’ll more likely fit right into this town with a long-standing love affair with roots music - see: just about any night at the Mill. We’ll be doing things a little differently tonight, hosting Band of Annuals, who are just as comfortable playing nightclubs as they are Americana festivals. They’ll be joined by a couple of Iowa City’s finer members of a young vanguard of songwriters - namely Caleb Engstrom and Keith Lynch, who has just released his own new record under the name Unknown Component. We’ve been singing Caleb’s praises for some time, but the presence of Unknown Component on the Iowa City scene will hopefully energize a new crowd of songwriting enthusiasts. Both of these fine musicians have previously played PS1, but they’ll be sharing a bill for the first time. Add Band of Annuals, and you’ve got a show that’s hard to pass up. It’s Monday night, but that doesn’t mean the music sleeps while you study, or whatever it is you do. Stop in for some music and check out Iowa City’s burgeoning new underground (seriously!) venue. Also, there will be beards.
Doors are at 8pm, donations are strongly recommended for artist support. PS1 is located on Washington St, between Subway and the Ped Mall, in the basement of the Jefferson Building.
