Review: My Morning Jacket

God speed and good luck to Mr. Jim James in his recovery.

Oh man, you think you’ve seen a lot in your day.  You think there are certain events (like say the ordeal with Oasis the other day), that you’ll never witness (and part of you doesn’t want to…but part of you, that part that really likes 3 Stooges films, wants to).  But Iowa City played host to a sad and one-in-a-million event on Tuesday night as My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James took a tumble off of the stage, and landed in the University of Iowa Hospitals (thankfully less than a block away).

Earlier that evening, Jim James took the stage in theatrical fashion, donning a cape for his entrance and doing a solo turn on “Bermuda Highway,” and followed that up with another At Dawn standout: the title track.  The band joined in for the second tune, aiding in the gradual uptick in momentum and volume that would be the theme for the abridged set.  The ideal-mix-tape-style build of the set included takes on “Golden,” “It Beats 4 U,” “Evil Urges,” “Touch Me, I’m Going to Scream pt. I,” and “Off the Record” (respectively).

For the final song of the band’s 7-song set, the quintet launched into it’s first proper jam.  “Off the Record,” one can only assume, was to be the jumping-off point for a potentially bombastic set.  However, as things built to the inevitable climax, James perched himself, stage left, above a throng of outstretched hands and with a large stomp and drop of his guitar head, signaled the end of the song.  With that gesticulation, James dropped from his perch into the pit.  Security, stage hands, and band members rushed to his aid, pulled the lead singer up onto stage, upon where he was escorted off.

Suffice it to say, after two announcements, the band emerged (minus James) to announce that frontman was already on his way to the hospital, and that would be the end of the evening.

No word as of “press” time on Mr. James’ condition, or the condition of the current tour, however, a mission freak friend (in fact, kin) was able to obtain the band’s set list for the evening; you can catch a glimpse of what might have been after the jump.
