Winter continues its methodical creep against our crusade for warmth and drinking outside. But whatever, that won’t get us down and keep us from enjoying a mid-February weekend in the deep thaw of Iowa City. From Valentines romance to dirty pants dance-dance, here is yr weekend guide…
Thursday
Physical Challenge Valentine’s Day Prom / 9PM at the Picador (upstairs) - Price: Sexy
Feeling lonely? Feeling lucky? Physical Challenge is a weekly dance party at the Picador, a veritable meat-market of the young folks wrapping their sweaty little arms around each other while the aged hipsters post up at the bar and talk about the old days of smacking up the dance floor like a handful of premium Chinese rocks. If you wanna hear Bloc Party singles, Kanye jams, and the requisite spin of “Deceptacon” while taking your chances on a hot one-night stand with an embittered but slightly charming comm. studies student you might wanna swing by the Picador tonight; because the unrequited lovers of the world will unite under one romantic four-on-the-floor thump. Can I be any more direct: you *might* get lucky tonight. Dirty synth bass lines will rev you up and $3 pitchers/$1 beers will facilitate your conquest of unchartered territory. But get there early and stake out yr spot on the dance floor — the prime rate’s goin’ up, up, up, up, up! Sound to be provided by impeccable DJs, Molly and the Bean. Vision to be provided by yr sweaty and sensuous brass-cheeks.
Friday
AV Collective / 9PM at the Picador - Price: Morality
“Wait, we’re going to the Picador? I was there last night acting a fool. I can’t show my face there ever again.”
Yeah, night two of yr Picador weekend unfolds with the AV Collective. Do you like your hip-hop heady, cryptic, and oblique? If so, go elsewhere. AV Collective are not for clean ears but rather for people who want to get down and smoke somethin’. Not that we’re suggesting you get down and smoke somethin’ but we’re just saying, if that’s the kind of thing you might be into, then roll by the Picador for a night of raw and unapologetically crass rap. You will dance, you will smile, and you might witness your friends smokin’ somethin’.
Saturday
Miles Nielson / 9PM at the Mill - Price: Makers
Okay, if Thursday and Friday brought you the hot and heavy beats, then Saturday’s yr respite. Miles Nielson, member of major label crooners the Wandering Sons, brings his side-project to the Mill. Expect a slice of classic rock apple pie with a soul/R&B topping.
