Of everything that’s been going on in Iowa City recently, maybe you just haven’t gotten your skull-crushing fix. That’s okay for you because this Thursday the Picador will be hosting the return of Converge to our fair town, meaning if you’re up for it, you can get your senses assaulted and battered to smithereens to kick off your weekend. You ought to at least know Converge in passing for their stunning, seminal hardcore (this ain’t your kid brother’s screamo-core, neither) effort Jane Doe (2001), but truth is that Converge have been perfecting their brutal bursts of metal - a punishing brand of hardcore with truly legit chops - since said kid brother was born, or (probably) earlier: 1991. The Boston quartet released their first full-length, Halo in a Haystack in 1994. Since then they’ve undergone numerous line-up changes while keeping their core and expanding their signature sound into something genre-defining. Their peerless work ethic means they’ve not only released records prolifically but they also tour relentlessly, building up a cultish fanbase and a tome of bands whom they’ve shared bills with, most of whom I’d guess would put Converge at the top of their list of heroes and influences. Ironically, their 6th and most recent record was entitled No Heroes and came out in 2006. Check out a beautifully dissonant nugget of that disc below.
