Turns out the impending investigation of paranormal activity right here in Johnson County has been called off, so keep your eyes open for anything strange going on this weekend. They say that there was a negative response to having a team come in to investigate, but our inner sources tell us here at the Freak that David Duchovny was just busy with whatever it is that David Duchovny does in a post X-Files world. As for things here at the Freak, things are decidedly back to normal as we’ve taken this week to return to our regular post schedule. Last weekend was crazy, so you might not run into us this weekend, but that doesn’t mean you should be a hermit. Here’s the scoop.
Thursday
Converge / Picador / $15 / 6pm, All-ages
Get your metal fix started off this evening with the return of prolific Boston quartet Converge. Can you navigate through hordes of moshing teenagers? Are you a moshing teenager? Now is your chance to find out. Baroness, the Red Chord, and Genghis Tron open.
Friday
Pelican / Picador / $8 / 9pm
Converge’s brutal assault too aggro for you? Or maybe your ears are still ringing? Keep the buzz ringing with Pelican’s instrumental stoner metal. If you didn’t bring your earplugs last night, we’d recommend them here. Oceans, Starter Kit, and the Post Mortems open.
Saturday
The Orphanage / Bijou Theatre / $5 / 7:30pm
Take a break from the clubs and bars and get in touch with your surrealist side, where they’re screening The Orphanage, the latest film from Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) and director Juan Antonio Bayona. I haven’t seen it either, so from Bijou website: “…an atmospheric and emotionally resonant tale of love, loss, and guilt. When Laura (Belén Rueda) returns home to renovate the orphanage she grew up in, she finds the past imposing on the present as her young son claims new imaginary friends—who may or may not be ghosts.”
