New Music: Albert Hammond Jr.

Everyone’s favorite Stroke, Albert Hammond Jr., has just posted a new song on iLike. It’s a (lead?) track from his next record, Como Te Llama, due out later this year. Seriously, with this guy steadily bumping out albums and straight-up lapping the Strokes on the prolific track, do we really need to hear from the rest of the band, especially after the bore-fest that was First Impressions of Earth (2006)? Well, it would be nice to hear Julian’s croon again and Fabs’ drum-machine pulse. Nonetheless, Hammond continues to prove himself a worthy rock n’ roll songwriter. His last album, Yours to Keep (2006), wasn’t a classic by any means but it was solid and offered a handful of radical summer tracks.

This new song, “GfC” crinkles with the sharp guitar lines of pure California rock (though it’s a little less juvenile than the musings of Coconut Records, Rooney, or Phantom Planet.) And therein lies the difference between Hammond and his NYC band mates: while the Strokes really bleed a (perceived?) New York sensibility through their songs, Hammond is quite successful at adapting that formula to more of a West Coast sound. Remember, the best song from Yours to Keep was entitled “101″ after all. “GfC” isn’t an entirely stunning track but damn, I gotta admit, it’s pretty catchy and well on its way to sneaking onto a summer mix. Keep at it Hammond: we like what you’re doing. Click below to hear the song. Thanks to the KRUI blog for finding this track first!
