Preview: Paleo w/ Old Time Relijun, Zebras, Dead Larry, and Adam Matthew Havlin

dead larryWe’ve already Freak Focused two of five acts hitting the Mill’s stage this evening, but apparently that’s not enough. Actually, look up at that headline, we haven’t said a whole lot about what else is going on, and it should be known that you’ll be getting considerably more than your $6 worth if you stop by the Mill this evening. For mp3’s and write-ups (those aforementioned Freak Foci) on Paleo and Old Time Relijun go here and there, respectively (it’s worth it).

But what about the other three? First there’s Adam Matthew Havlin. The former Death Ships drummer has left a life he was building in Madison to come back to the friendly confines of the good ol’ IC. He’s also moved from behind the kit to play guitar. According to Havlin, the set will be comprised of a couple covers, a few originals and a duet (might be with someone on the bill… nudge, nudge).

There’s also Dead Larry. A strong component of what I like to call the “Yacht Club Scene”, the regular acts that fill the basement venue with slinky, funky bass lines and soaring, winding guitar licks. Y’know, jam bands. (That’s not a pejorative either.) Larry rep some serious groove and their recorded material almost explicitly points out where the solos will be in a live rendition, but there is a focus on the songwriting for this quartet. So even though it’s quite likely that their 4-6 minute recorded material will balloon to 7-10 minute grooves, they do have a penchant for anchoring their songs with solid, less tangential structures.

The surprise, at least for the blogger, of this bill is Madison’s Zebras. The trio is bursting at the seems with the imminent release (July-ish) of their debut EP. Tonight you get a preview of the 7 songs they’ve recorded and mastered for the release (one of ‘em streaming down there) as well as a hand full of others. And yeah, you read the two preceding paragraphs, these guys ain’t quite guitar strumming troubadours, or folk infused jammy goodness, this is angular, jumpy, spastic, erratic, Prog-dance-punk (yeah, two hyphens). They’ll probably stick out like three sore thumbs tonight. But don’t be frightened if you find yourself shimmying on the dancefloor, there’ll be at least a couple of us mission freakers out there too (okay, at least me). Peep that song down there and tell me you’re not excited…
