Preview: Johanna Kunin

Johanna KuninWe are excited about the newly reopened Public Space (located in the basement of the Jefferson Building between Subway and the Ped Mall). To express our delight at having this wonderful space at our disposal, we’ve put together an awesome show this Thursday evening for you to enjoy. Join us as we celebrate the music of Seattle’s Johanna Kunin (say KOON-yin) alongside two of our very favorite Iowa City performers, Caleb Engstrom and Skye Carrasco.

Johanna comes to us from Seattle with a new EP in tow - the Seaworthy Sleeper EP features the title track, which you can download below, two new songs, and three live tracks from 2007. She’ll be touring as a duo alongside Jeremy Hadley (bad-ass member of the equally bad-ass Velella Velella), playing gorgeous piano driven ballads that are infinitely deeper than their surface simplicity belies. The haphazard Tori Amos comparison can be thrown around gently, if only because the leading female voices of “indie” rock - Cat Power, Neko Case, Jenny Lewis - don’t really apply. Her voice is hypnotic and her songs are laden with the snowfall of Midwestern winters. Furthermore, she’s something of an undiscovered talent - you’ll regret missing her in this vibrant, unique space if you do indeed miss it. We fancy ourselves lucky to have her - you’ll fancy yourself out of the loop if you don’t go.
