Mayflies + Monads + Illinois John Fever - June 12th / Mill / 10pm / $6

Monads! This is a rough and ready bluegrass / punk attitude explosion. Really, is there anything else to say? After you get all-sensitive and mushy at Iron & Wine, stop by the Mill, pony up a some bucks for some real drinking (sorry Englert) and get busy with the kick-ass Mayflies and St. Louis’ Monads who we’re liking more and more each day.

Wye Oak + Poison Control Center - June 15th / The Mill / 9PM / ALL-AGES / $8
w. Pontiak, The BotticellisCasiotone
Fuck Saturdays. Sundays are the new prime cut. Seriously, for the past month we’ve been getting wasted and rocking out venues and bars across town for Sunday night romps. The mf saga continues at the Mill this Sunday with — dare we say — Iowa’s best band: The Poison Control Center. Plus there are a bunch of other dashing indie media darlings kicking up dust that night: Wye Oak (fresh off a Merge Records release), Pontiak, and (damn we love SF) San Francisco’s the Botticellis.

The Waybacks + the Pines - June 21st / Mill / 9pm / ALL-AGES / $10

Pines - DavidWelcome to the Americana Explosion. The Pines would be enough to roll you out of bed but damn, now we’ve got San Francisco’s Waybacks dropping in to warm things up at the Mill. If you know anything about acoustic guitars, tales of road-weary Tom Joads, whiskey drinking, and dark voices then you’ll likely be here for this show.

dd/mm/yyyy + Birth Rites - June 28th / Picador / 9PM / 19+ / $8
w. The Weird Weeds, Datagun
Film SchoolFace-melt is a term to be used lightly. Thus we’ve saved it for this show. We’ve freaking out over the chance to pair up dd/mm/yyyy and Birth Rites for some time. dd/mm/yyyy (from Toronto) is all-energy, all-pop, all-noise all-of-the-time and Birth Rites is like Cursive ten years ago. Freak homies, Datagun, will open the show and the Weird Weeds (indie rock from Austin) will close. This show is gonna kill.

F Yeah Fest w. Monotonix / Team Robespierre / Crystal Antlers - July 1st / Mill / 8PM / All-Ages / $8
w. School of Flyentology, Puritanicals
Team RobespierreThis is the crown-jewel of July. F Yeah Fest rolls its explosive chops into the Mill for an evening of comedy and straight-up soul crushing rock. There will also be dance beats so that you may quietly pick up the pieces of your soul when the bands are done. We’ve already rapped a bit about this show in a previous post but just a reminder: this is the best Tuesday of the entire summer. And if Sundays are the new Saturdays then Tuesdays are the new Fridays. Bring your helmet yo.

Lonelyhearts / Monadnoc / Suzannah Johanness - July 10 / PS1 / 8PM

suzannahAfter all of that rocking out, it’ll be nice to cozy up to a warm and intimate show. The Lonelyhearts return to Iowa City for more of those sad and weary synth-folk tales. For the first time they’ll share the stage with Iowa City’s prodigal son, Miguel Soria (Monadnoc). We couldn’t think of a better pairing. If lyricism and acoustic guitars are your friends then this show is your home.
