Preview: Chuck Klosterman

Downtown OwlThough at least one member of our staff maintains an obstinately cynical opinion on him, we’d be extremely foolish to miss out on this week’s appearance by author Chuck Klosterman, who will be appearing at the Englert Theatre on Wednesday night. Klosterman will be appearing as part of a free lecture series presented by the University of Iowa. Klosterman has made his name as a writer and journalist, though his approaches to blur the lines between the two. He first garnered mainstream attention for his 2003 collection of essays Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, which brought together some of his finer works as a contributor to magazines such as Spin and Esquire. His most recently published anthology, Chuck Klosterman IV, also connects essays and interviews on pop culture, but also contains his first published foray into the entirely fictional genre. His appearance at the Englert precedes his forthcoming debut novel, Downtown Owl, which sees publications September 16 via Scribner. This direction isn’t totally surprising, given his proclivity to embellish lengthy, memoir-like passages within his greater scope. Downtown Owl explores the lives of three characters who reside in an isolated North Dakota town (”Owl”) that is so small it purportedly has remained untouched by popular culture.

His writing typically straddles the gap between academic and campy, as he waxes his considerable knowledge of pop culture while combining his wit and humor with a knack for storytelling for the masses. How this will translate to the novel format is up in the air, but you can attend his lecture on Wednesday to get a glimpse. Though his topic of discussion remains undisclosed, it’s unfathomable that he would waste this opportunity to read from his newest work. Book signing and sale will follow, so it sounds like you may even be able to score yourself a copy of Downtown Owl at this event.

Chuck Klosterman will be appearing at the Englert on Wednesday, August 27 at 8:30 pm. The event is free, so get there early to ensure you gain admission.
