New D.I.Y. Venue: The Glory Hole

glory holeThe art-loving folks who live at the house at Washington and Lucas have turned their basement into an official D.I.Y. venue called the Glory Hole. The first show kicks off tonight featuring Tree Tops (from Chicago), Uneven Universe (from Detroit), and locals Uncomforter and Supersonic Piss. This is a great thing for Iowa City. It means more art and more music. The venue is a cozy basement with killer sound and astounding intimacy. Look forward to seeing some of the best local and underground touring talent at the Glory Hole. There is another show on Thursday, July 3rd. Details forthcoming. The show tonight begins at 930PM.

Freakin’ Weekend: 5.8-5.10

Mother's DayDon’t forget that amidst your last weekend of pre-finals revelry, this Sunday is Mother’s Day, one of our most important holidays. Make sure you take time to remember your mom, or grandmother, or wife/girlfriend, or whatever. You totally should already have a card in the mail. If not, you can totally snag a sarcastic and hilarious card like the one here at Some Ecards (thanks!). Your mom probably won’t get it, but she’ll appreciate that you thought of her at the last minute and sent her a digital card to say, “See, after all this time I forgot about you until the last minute.” Just kidding. But really, you can make somebody’s day this Sunday and it doesn’t even have to be your mom. Just be nice to moms. Now without further ado, all the things you can do in the days leading up to it so that you totally forget that shit.

Thursday
Film School w. Airiel, Foul Tip, Birth Rites / Picador / 9pm / $7
Nuff said. Did you really need more?

Friday
The Mayflies w. Highway Shelter / The Industry / 9pm / $6 / 21+
Friday night, Mission Creek vets the Mayflies rock the newest venue in town, The Industry, which also happens to be the most awfully named venue in town. Rumor has it that the once-Q Bar has undergone a totally sick makeover and is going to become a legitimately hot venue. If you haven’t seen it yet, this would be a good chance to check it out.

Saturday
What a Load of Craft! 4 / Picador / Noon-6pm / FREE
Your very own DIY local craft fair and record swap, all day at the Picador free of charge. What more can you ask for?

Dead Meadow w. The Black Hollies, Mondo Drag, Brutus and the Psychedelic Explosions / Picador / 9pm / $8
…oh yeah, you could get Matador Records’ Dead Meadow in town for an evening of totally spaced out stoner indie rock. Kind of like a slowed down, fried up Pavement. Their new record, Old Growth, came out in February to positive reviews.

Preview: Home Cooked

Home CookedSaturday night is your opportunity to get out and get DIY-as-fuck at a house party/art show/rock show/extravaganza. Home Cooked is an art show - no, a happening that is being put on by a group of motivated local artists looking to provide an alternative space for Iowa City’s underground art scene. This will be the second of such installments, hopefully occurring regularly. BYOB and get sophisticated with poetry readings and a slew of local artists spanning 2D, 3D, and video/intermedia works before you get rowdy with several bands performing short sets. As if that weren’t enough, it’s a perfect chance to get out of the same old bars, meet and converse with some new heads, and kick the stagnancy of winter in the butt.

The event starts at 6 with readings until 7, at which point music kicks off and will run through the rest of the evening, which concludes approximately at 11. Throughout the evening you’ll be able to check out local artwork in a unique space that straddles the fence between house party and gallery. Acts performing include Foul Tip, Datagun, Nimby, Family Van, and others. Come with your favorite non-bar sanctioned adult beverage.

Recapitulation:
WHAT: Home Cooked art show

WHEN: Saturday April 26, 6-11pm - FREE (!) - BYOB

Freakin’ Weekend: 4.24-4.27

hrcAnd now, a message from the former First Lady of the United States, the Junior Senator from New York, Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton:

Hello Mission Freak readers! I know it’s been a few months since I saw many of you last, but I wanted to catch you up on how things have been going for me lately. We’ve had to put a little more effort into campaigning than we originally anticipated (you pesky Iowans really f***** things up!), but after cranking our character assassination machine into high gear, Bill and I have successfully alienated our entire African American voter base, torn the Democratic party apart, and given John McCain and the Republican party the blueprint for how to use racial/religious innuendoes to attack Barack Obama until November and beyond! Karl Rove’s got nothing on us! Also, I wanted to let you know that I am continuing to work tirelessly to convince superdelegates to overturn your votes and hand me the nomination, because we all know I am the only Democrat in the race who is dishonest, slimy, and ruthless enough to beat the Republicans in November!

Love,
HRC

PS: Come to these concerts this weekend…or I’ll eat your children!

Thursday
Daphne Willis & Co. w/ Musee Mecanique / Yacht Club / 9 PM / $5
One of the most unique shows you’ll see all year, as the dreamy sounds of Oregon’s Musee Mecanique will join forces with Daphne Willis’ Jack Johnson-like acousti-pop. Phillip the Grave opens in their Yacht Club debut.

Friday
30th Annual RiverFest featuring Quietdrive / IMU River Terrace / 4PM - 11PM (Fri & Sat) / Free

An Iowa City spring tradition turns the big 3-0 as RiverFest returns with a lineup full of pop-punk, rock & jam bands playing two nights on the shores of the very swollen Iowa River. Minneapolis natives Quietdrive, famous for their cover of “Time After Time“, will take the stage at 9PM on Friday. A hypnotist, movie screening, and plenty more bands are also scheduled for Saturday.

Mirah & Spectratone International present: “Share This Place” / Herrick Chapel (Grinnell College) / 9PM
I’m not even going to pretend like I know what this is all about, but here’s a predictably erudite description of this show from our friends at Pfork: “Share This Place is the album from K Records standout Mirah, but it also a multimedia project commissioned by the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art and the Seattle International Children’s Festival, comprised of the songs contained herein and accompanying stop-motion video by Britta Johnson. Inspired in part by the writings of French entomologist Jean Henri Fabré and the Capek brothers’ anthropomorphic drama /The Insect Play/, with a dash of the insectile existentialism of Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis”, Share This Place is a palimpsest where the separate fiefdoms of humans and insects are reconciled in one teeming kingdom.” Exactly.

Saturday
Home Cooked Art Show featuring Foul Tip, Datagun, and more / 805 E. Washington St. / 6-11 PM / Free (BYOB!)
The dopest “House Party” since Kid ’n Play is happenin’ this Saturday at 805 E. Washington St, as the first (annual?) Home Cooked Art Show will bring together artists, writers, and musicians in a celebration of all things arty-as-fuck.  Foul Tip, the demon spawn of Iowa City favorites The Tanks, are scheduled to perform alongside Iowa City’s poorest excuse for a rock band, Datagun. Keep your eyes on Mission Freak for more info on this super/awesome event in the coming days!
