Preview: Jazz Fest

RedmanSo, some people are going to be in Des Moines this weekend, but if you’re staying around Iowa City, it won’t exactly be settling. The fine folks with Iowa Ctiy Summer of the Arts have gotten three of the biggest names in contemporary jazz for this year’s Iowa City Jazz Festival: Medeski, Martin & Wood, John Scofield, and the Joshua Redman Trio. For those uninitiated in living jazz artists, you don’t get much bigger. You have to look to the handful of dudes that played with Miles and still giggin’ (oh wait, Scofield was in Davis’ band from ‘82 - ‘85). And like always, the music is free.

John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood, headline the first night of the festivitie (i.e. kick off your 4th of July Weekend with a bang). Medeski Martin & Wood have been straddling the line between jam band and jazz band for 16 years, and in many ways, it is that particular friction that keeps them exciting and popular. Loved by dead heads for long, funky jams (or “crunchy grooves”) and equally loved by the jazz set for their avant-garde leanings and incessant exploration, MMW have just enough funk in their trunk or the casual jazz fan and just enough moxy for the snobs.

Freakin’ Weekend: 7.3-7.5

4th of JulyAh, Independence Day weekend…a celebration of our nation’s coming of age. When I was younger this meant trips to our beach house, spending time with family, fireworks, and the like. As I’ve aged, it’s come to mean something more like drinking heavily with friends. The spirit hasn’t really changed. Something vaguely patriotic about overcoming tyranny, or something…anyway, this year is a special cause for celebration as we’ll be headed west to enjoy ourselves at the inaugural 80/35 Festival in Des Moines. We understand that not all of our readers can make it to Des Moines for a weekend of music that features the Roots and the Flaming Lips, so I’ll take a quick minute as I’m getting ready to skip town to provide you with the info on what you should get up to, even if we won’t feel sorry for missing it.

Thursday
Datagun, Sewn Leather, Joey Casio, T’Bone / The Gloryhole / 9pm / Pass the hat
If you were there on Tuesday, then you know the Gloryhole. That’s all I’m sayin’.

Friday
Medeski, Martin, & Wood w. United Jazz Ensemble, Sam Salamone Trio / Jazzfest Downtown / 4pm / FREE
You can celebrate the 232nd anniversary of our country’s liberty at the first night of Iowa City’s Jazz Festival as Medeski, Martin, and Wood bring a not-so-jazz brand of jam music to our own downtown. Music begins around 4 with United Jazz Ensemble, but should you choose to just take in the headliner, MMW are slated to play from 8-9:30. Stick around after for Iowa City’s fireworks display, which you can take in from the pentacrest.

Saturday
The Roots w. Black Francis, Jakob Dylan, etc. / 80-35 Festival in Des Moines / All Day / $30
Really? This festival is going on in Des Moines and you aren’t even going to show up for a day? That’s so foolish. If you missed the Flaming Lips on Friday night, you can still pay $30 for the Roots and get some killer bands along with it in the Envy Corps, the Poison Control Center, Black Francis (that’s the lead singer of the Pixies, dork), Neva Dinova, and others. Just go, okay?

Preview: 80/35 Festival

Flaming LipsIt’s hard to imagine being an Iowan and missing out on Des Moines’ inaugural 80/35 Music Festival, which boasts an impressive lineup in its first year..The Roots? The Flaming Lips? Black freakin’ Francis? This promises to be not only the premiere Iowa music event of the summer but also a destination as its namesake indicates: two major interstates converge in Des Moines, making it the perfect center for folks traveling from all sorts of Midwestern hubs. Three-fourths of the Freak staff will be in attendance, taking in a weekend of sun, booze, and diverse musical talent. There isn’t a lot more for me to say - I think the line-up speaks volumes. As with any festival, you won’t be able to see everyone, and that will be okay. So straight from us, here’s our ideal take - precisely, where you’ll most likely be able to find us, when we’re not in line for beer - on this weekend’s activities.

Friday, July 4th

5:45 - Colourmusic (Meredith West Stage)
6:45 - Rock Plaza Central (Meredith West Stage)

7:15 - The Poison Control Center (Bravo East Stage)
8:00 - The Envy Corps (Meredith West Stage)
9:00 - The Roots (Mediacom Main Stage)

Anyway, that clearly leaves a lot of worthy folks out too, so do your research and then do your own thing. Tickets are still available. Advance tickets are cheaper, so pick them up online: weekend passes are only $50, or if you can only make it for a day it’s $30 each. Enjoy some mp3s below, and then get thee a ticket.

Freakin’ Weekend: 6.26 - 6.28

Spain

Thursday
Bear Weather / Holy Roman Empire / Red and the Eds @ The Mill — 9PM
What’s really cool about this show is that it’s a true showcase of local indie rock talent. Most of the bands are associated with Iowa City label, Slanty Shanty. It’ll be interesting to see how they represent. Bear Weather and Holy Roman Empire flirt with experimental indie rock while Red and the Eds have funkier tendencies.

Friday
Wolf Eyes / Lwa / Trash Dog / Clakity Sax @ the Picador — 9PM
Wolf Eyes bring their psychedelic noise to the Picador. Expect lots of long builds and thick enveloping sounds. It’s been a minute since they’ve been through here so it should be a solid show. But to be honest, get there in time for locals Lwa who, as of late, have been getting better and better like you wouldn’t believe. Lwa unfolds hypnotic waves of sound and noise, as well as delays and distortions which will entrance you and entrance and entrance you.

Saturday
Mission Creek Presents: Weird Weeds / dd/mm/yyyy / Birth Rites / Datagun @ the Picador — 9PM
This should be a sick show. dd/mm/yyyy are downright awesome and energetic. We’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. Birth Rites, who so often remind us of early Cursive, and Austin’s Weird Weeds play as well. Local noisepop band, Datagun, opens.

Freakin’ Weekend: 6.19-6.21

TwiggySo with the reservoir officially crested it appears we’re on the way to recovery, and it looks like it’s going to be lengthy. That being said, it is summer (officially as of Friday!), and we’d be remiss if we let record flood conditions get in the way of our merrymaking. Summertime means all sorts of things, like baseball and fireworks and hot dogs on the grill and stuff, and it certainly means that you’ve no excuse to be out enjoying yourself in the company of good music and friends. Remember when it was so cold that you’re favorite band in the world could have been playing and you still might have looked out side and said, “Fuck it.”? Well that time is over now. Don’t take it for granted. Stay dry. And for the record, I did not know that the water skiing squirrel was named Twiggy. They say you learn something new every day, and that just may be true.

Thursday
All-Star Benefit for United Way Flood Relief Fund / The Mill / 7pm / Donation is encouraged
How could you not make it out for this show featuring a great many of Iowa City’s most popular and prolific musicians. This is undoubtedly an evening that defies musical genre, and should be a great evening of music and people coming together to support a very present and justifiable need - we don’t need to say anymore than everything that’s been said about the plight of many, not just in Iowa City, but in much of Eastern and Central Iowa. Come out in the face of the flood, have some beers, and kick back to enjoy some music knowing that you’re making a difference in the hippest way. Public Property, David Zollo, Samuel Locke-Ward, Shame Train, the Red Smear, the Burning Halos, Cellar Door, Nate Basinger, and Dustin Busch will all perform. Damn!

Friday
The Cotton Jones Basket Ride w. Bad Flirt, Chrash / The Picador / 9pm
It’s been almost a year since the last time Page France, aka Michael Nau rolled through town, but a lot can change in a year - Nau recently announced that he’d be putting the Page France moniker on the back burner (perhaps for good) to focus on another project called the Cotton Jones Basket Ride. Friday they’ll be playing new songs from a trio of EPs and a forthcoming record, Paranoid Cocoon, which may or may not be out sometime this year on Quite Scientific. Montreal girl pop outfit Bad Flirt and Davenport’s Chrash open.

Saturday
Mission Creek Presents: The Waybacks w. The Pines / The Mill / 9pm / $10
We are pumped to be welcoming back the Pines for a show supporting San Francisco’s bluegrass fiends the Waybacks. They represent a musically tight explosion of chops, but their penchant for tale-telling defies any “jam-grass” categorization you might be tempted to give them. The Pines return from Minneapolis to their home state bearing their darkly inventive take on roots music that’s both well schooled and aware of present trends.

Tomorrow: Exodus Music Festival!

Tomorrow afternoon, Exodus Music Festival awakens from a several year hiatus, and this beast is poised to reestablish itself as one of the most fun and musically adventurous days of music in the state. The promoters of this year’s fest have done a killer job incorporating the Iowa City old favorites, the Iowa City new school, as well as great bands from other parts of the country. Here at Mission Creek, we look on in awe (and often in horror) as more and more giant corporate-sponsored festivals throw absurd sums of money at bands in the name of an afternoon of fun (and profit); Exodus, like us, is keeping things local, homegrown, and community-oriented. This year, they’ve also partnered with Earth Expo to think not just about the local community, but the global one. That’s a message we can all get down with. And its $12 bucks, BYO everything, and on a farm.

So as you’re chilling out on a blanket with some organic grub, tasty beer, and whatever other supplements you need to survive a day-long music fest, here are some of the jams that you absolutely have to catch. But seriously, every band on the bill is worth checking out.

MC/VL: Minnestota hip-hop duo take the fun and playfulness of early career Beastie Boys into the 21st century. White guys decked out in mullets and super-ironic stashes, they have old-skool flavor but back it up with tight rhymes and innovative samples, including many from the world of indie rock. [Myspace]

School of Flyentology: We can’t stop giving these dudes props for slaying it at Mission Creek with Steve from the Hood Internet, but they actaully deserve more respect for quietly establishing the most progressive and interesting dance party in Iowa City, every Tuesday night at the Yacht Club. I saw one of the duo last night, and he said they’ve been working hard on the set. When these guys work hard, you better believe that means you working it even harder on the dance floor. Or grassy lawn or whatever. Might want to pack some bottles of water.

Miracles of God: Samuel Locke-Ward has been written about one million times on this blog. I caught the end of the Miracles of God set on Tuesday night at the Mill, and it was great. Locke-Ward will be heading off on a summer tour soon with the Teddy Boys, so come wish him well, and listen to the best, most concise and interesting pop that our fair city has to offer. [Myspace]

Skye: Ex-Skursula violist is keeping the dream alive with delicate songs sung beatifully, and the trademark birds and bees and cuddly things that we’ve all come to love about Skye’s lyrics. Her solo show is a loop pedal extravaganza, which makes it temping to make the comparison to Andrew Bird, but that wouldn’t really make any sense. Skye is in a class by herself.

Freakin’ Weekend: 6.05 - 6.07

obamaWhew, don’t you just feel relieved? We now have our two presumptive nominees from the two major parties, and we can really get into the muck-racking and mud-slinging. But first, how about everyone takes a long deep breath this weekend. Get out and get some fresh air, get some culture. Thankfully, Iowa City is flush with that this weekend.

Thursday

Matthew Grimm & the Red Smear w/ Porch Builder, Old Panther, and Elsinore / The Picador / 9pm / $5

Tonight Matthew Grimm and his Red Smears take the Picador by storm to shake up your newfound political comfort, and probably yell at you a bit. Get angry. Get really angry.

Smearspac: here

Friday

Iowa Arts Festival / Downtown Iowa City / Friday, Saturday, and Sunday / FREE

Technically the whole shindig starts off with a Baby Boomers-themed event on Thursday night over by the Senior Center, but no one’s really getting into the swing of things till Friday when (as previously reported) the husband and wife quartet (two sets) The Finders and Youngberg take the stage at 6pm. For the full itinerary check out the schedule here, or just wander around down town till you find someone official looking. Lots of art, food, and music, let’s just hope those predictions of thunderstorms and rain don’t come to fruition.  (Edit: it appears that the many sayings about Iowa weather are true, and the once ominous predictions for almost constant rain and awfulness have been lifted)

Saturday

The Pines w/ Seth Wenger, Dustin Bush, and Constie Brown / The Mill / 9pm / $8

The prodigal son returns with friends in tow. Benson Ramsey, son of Iowa City stalwart Bo, returns to the Mill with his bandmate David Huckfelt, they’ve dubbed themselves The Pines. When the Mill played host to the duo’s CD release party (the duo’s debut The Sparrow in the Bell) last year, the two Iowa boys were joined by numerous guests of numerous stripes, so keep your eyes open. Heck, maybe Pa Ramsey will show his face and his axe to lend his son a hand.

Check out the Pines’ myspace here.

Preview: Nethervoid w/ The Horde, Showering Ashes, and Freaklable

devil hornsDo you have those devil horns ready? I’ve been workin’ mine out like mad, making sure that my index and pinkie fingers are strong and limber, ’cause I’ll be flashing that shit all night tonight.

You may have noticed a distinct hipster vibe on these pages, and you wouldn’t be wrong in that assumption. However, we’ve been loving ourselves some Foul Tip lately, and when half of Foul Tip, bass player, Adam Luksetich, plays guitar in lieu of his normal bass, we’re not inclined towards asking questions. Tonight, Luksetich will be shredding and ripping six strings for Nethervoid, his third band (yeah, he’s in The Tanks too)(Foul Tip is indefinitely defunct according to its two members — so Adam’s only in two bands as far as we know).

For those of you accustomed to the playful drum and bass  antics of Foul Tip, Nethervoid is a whole new world only glimpsed at in Luksetich’s fist pumping gestures and head bangs. This is paint your face, ridicule Christianity, and flip the fuck out kind of music. In the words of Nathan Explosion, “this is brutal.” Dudes actually tore pages from a Bible to make their posters.

Nethervoid has been on ice as of late, but that seems to be the theme of the evening. Quad Cities’ own D n D metal crew (i.e. dragons and ripping fast guitar lines) The Horde has also been hibernating, and Showering Ashes is bringing back their “metal-punk” for a reunion tour. This is gonna be like some Phoenix rising from the ashes kind of shit.

It all goes down when doors open at 9pm. It’s $5 to get in, and there are no refunds if you break, bruise, or bleed. Hit up that trio of mp3’s down there and it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you check out the 10 minute video of one of Nethervoid’s performances on their myspace page here. Oh yeah, and Scenster Credentials has the latest release from The Horde, From Empire to Ashes, you can scope SC’s mypsace for more info here (nice album cover, eh?)

Freakin’ Weekend: 5.29 - 5.31

I think it was Edwin Way Teale who said, “The world’s favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.”  Indeed, May is a month when all things, in fact, might be possible: graduations, really bad karma, inappropriate dorm touching finally being prosecuted, music, sunshine, lollipops, etc. etc.  And with just three more days of magical May remaining it is time to get out and do your thing before June, which someone once said “is a skanky-ass bitch.”  When all things are possible, however, one might succumb to paralysis and fear at the sheer scope of possibilities. (What would the world be like if anything was possible?) That’s where we step in with our weekly list of things to do, which, for this weekend only, you can imagine as merely three out of an infinite number of possibilties.

Thursday
Johanna Kunin w/ Caleb Engstrom, Skye Carrasco / Public Space ONE / 8 PM / $3

Read just below this post for the full skinny.  This will be a very nice show, and will give you plenty of time to prowl the night afterwards.

Friday
Dave Zollo and the Body Electric / The Mill / 9 PM / $6

I’ll let the Mill’s website do the talkin’ for me: “Equipped with a ‘rode hard and put away wet’ whiskey-soaked rasp and a deep bag of keyboard chops that echoes some of the greats of country, rhythm & blues and gut-bucket rock, Zollo and the boys are sure to move your feet.”

“Rode hard and put away wet”?? I’ll go to this show, but I’ll feel weird about it.  And I’ll also start trying to work that phrase into as many casual conversations as I can.

Saturday
Mutators w/ Modern Creatures, Wet Hair / 115 N. Dodge / 9:30 PM
Why not end the weekend with a little house party of the experimental music variety? Local impresario, artist, and kind mastermind Shawn Reed plays in Wet Hair, and the other two bands are from Vancouver, which ups the “cool factor’ by about one million per cent.  See you there, if you dare.

a one: http://www.myspace.com/mutators
and a two: http://www.myspace.com/moderncreatures
and a three: http://www.myspace.com/nightpeoplerecords

Freakin’ Weekend: 5.22-5.24

Ghost TownWah-wah-wah…School’s out for summer/forever here in the IC, but by no means does that mean the rockin’ has to end. If anything, the sudden dearth of college Joes & Janes should be considered a welcome relief to those of us tired of pushing our way through crowds in the pursuit of sweet sweet Grain Belt. So kick back, relax, and enjoy that newfound elbow room…we promise to keep you up on that hot shit all summer long.

Thursday
Minipop w/ D’BARI, North to the Future / The Picador / 9 PM / $5

I’m not gonna lie…I’d never heard of Bay Area “dream poppers” Minipop until this week, but after listening to one of their songs on the SXSW page (which they played earlier this year), I’ve totally got a mini-crush. And yes, that pun was pretty freakin’ terrible.

Friday
Mission Creek and Slanted Productions/Slanty Shanty Records Present:
Paleo, Old Time Relijun, Dead Larry, Zebras, Adam Matthew Havlin / The Mill / 9PM / $6
If our Paleo and Old Time Relijun previews haven’t convinced you to catch this show, I’m not sure what else to say (except that you are really lame, maybe?). The team of Mission Creek and Slanted/Slanty Shanty has put together an incredibly solid show (ed. note: missionfreak.com is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mission Creek Productions, (soon-to-be) Inc.) that is guaranteed to please both whiskey and wine-bomb drinkers alike.

Saturday
Mad Monks w/ Mint Wad Willy, Done by Nine / Iowa City Yacht Club / 9PM / $5
Mad Monks? Cage match?
Craig Eley will be there…will you?
