New Music: John Vanderslice - Romanian Names

Just two weeks remain until the much anticipated return of John Vanderslice to the Mill. You may have been there for his sold out show with The Mountain Goats as part of Mission Creek Fest in April, and if you weren’t, that’s a shame, because it was a pretty unique event. This time, he’ll be touring as the headliner and with a full band in support of his new album, Romanian Names, which came out yesterday on his new home Dead Oceans.

He’ll be touring with a different Mission Creek alum, Swedish songwriter the Tallest Man on Earth. The Tallest Man on Earth came out of nowhere to become one of the most legendary Mission Creek performers as he captivated a packed house at Public Space ONE. His record, Shallow Graves, wound up being one of my favorite records of 2008, though I’ll admit I wasn’t turned onto it until early 2009. As for Vanderslice, he’s departed longtime home Barsuk Records for the green pastures of Dead Oceans, which happens to be home to a lot of great bands - Bowerbirds and Evangelicals among them. Romanian Names is his 7th album and first since Emerald City (2007).

Dead Oceans has made two tracks available for download, “Fetal Horses” and “Too Much Time.” Get ‘em below, and then make sure to get your advance tickets for Vanderslice with the Tallest Man right here. At $8 in advance, it’s a steal.
