Mission Freak Records: Porno Galactica / Golden Birds / Alexis Stevens / And More!

A dispatch from our record label: It’s been straight-up crazy time over here at Mission Freak Records. This past week has seen the release of several albums both physically and digitally. If you are interested in checking out the artists that we support there couldn’t be a better time than now to order a CD or download some MP3s. Our online DIGITAL STORE is HERE. Our store for physical releases will be set up very soon. You can also grab these releases online from Amazon and iTunes. Here’s a list of our most recent releases:

Porno Galactica - Romance in the New World (Physical CD and Digital MP3 Album)
This album is pure joy, a cavalcade of electronic schizophrenia and hard-hitting dance beats. It’s like a Nintendo soundtrack re-imagined by Daft Punk. 10 songs, each of them doing something different, something provocative. Porno Galactica is out of Fairfield, Iowa.

Golden Birds - The Soft War (Physical CD and Digital MP3 Album)
Another album from the depths of Web McBride’s creative mind. This guy is not unlike Dave Longstreth (Dirty Projectors) in his unfaltering passion for delivering a specific and unique vision. In fact, the two songwriters were friends in college but that’s a different story. The Soft War is McBride’s latest blast of frantic guitar strumming, expansive vocal harmonies, and extremely literate lyrics. Golden Birds are from Brooklyn, New York.

Alexis Stevens - Flood or Drought (Physical and Digital MP3 Album)
Written and recorded in Portland, Oregon, Flood or Drought, is an impressive debut from Alexis Stevens whose work reflects the indie-folk spirit of that city. Subtle and accomplished guitar work mixes with haunting vocals and poignant lyricism. The effect is dreamy and mellow, yet gripping. Stevens is from Iowa City, Iowa.

Datagun - Where the Wild Things Aren’t (Cassette Tape Only)
This full-length cassette release from Datagun features a few tracks from their upcoming album but is mostly a showcase for one song that won’t appear on the album. That song “Exit Strategies” is an expansive 14-minute epic that ranges from mellow acoustic-electronica to full blast energetic space jamming to reflective noise composition: perhaps a worthy introduction to this often dark, ethereal, and minimal band that echoes several aspects of the Factory Records catalog. Datagun is from Iowa City, Iowa.
