SUMMARY:Mamiffer
DESCRIPTION:Faith Coloccia started Mamiffer as a solo project\, performing anywhere in Seatlle--from sewers to art galleries. As the project evolved\, Coloccia enlisted a rotation of different musicians to collaborate with\, mixing her hauntingly beautiful vocals and fragmented neo-classical sound with electronic hums to create the band’s minimalistic\, droning sound\, which Pitchfork has described as “…if Tori Amos went mute and post-metal.” The band is now comprised of two core members\, Coloccia and her husband Aaron Turner. The duo still collaborates with a slew of other musicians\, including with Chicago-based Locrian for their joint album Bless Them That Curse You. Mamiffer’s latest album\, 2014’s Statu Nascendi\, is only four songs but spans a dreamy 37 minutes.

DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with University of Iowa Lecture Committee\n\n"American cartoonist Alison Bechdel is best known for her long-running\, award-winning comic strip\, Dykes to Watch Out For\, which was first published in 1983. The comic strip became a countercultural institution among lesbians and discerning non-lesbians all over the world. Ms. Magazine dubbed this generational chronicle “one of the pre-eminent oeuvres in the comics genre\, period.”\n\nHer work focuses on the overlap of political and personal spheres\, the relationship of the self to the world outside. In the New York Times Book Review write-up of her 2012 memoir Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama\, Katie Roiphe wrote\, “There’s a lucidity to Bechdel’s work that in certain ways … bears more resemblance to poetry than to the dense\, wordy introspection of most prose memoirs. The book delivers lightning bolts of revelation\, maps of insight and visual snapshots of family entanglements in a singularly beautiful style.”\n\nTime magazine named her book Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic the Best Book of 2006\, describing the tightly architected investigation into her closeted bisexual father’s suicide “a masterpiece about two people who live in the same house but different worlds\, and their mysterious debts to each other.” Fun Home was adapted into a musical in 2015 and was nominated for five Tony Awards including “Best Musical.”

DESCRIPTION:Formed in Germany in the late 60s\, Faust is one of the original experimental rock bands\, and an icon of the krautrock genre... perhaps THE most iconic krautrock band\, heralded as a ground-breaking and innovative group of musicians from the very beginning. Their first album\, Faust\, was released in 1971\, their second album So Far was released in 1972\, and their third album\, IV\, was released in 1973 before the group disbanded. Some of the original members reunited in 1990\, and they've released a new series of albums including their latest Something Dirty (2011) and j U S t (2014). Ever innovative and experimental\, Faust evades strict categorization\, recording music that merges pop\, psychedelia\, tape\, and electronic music. Their sound continues to draw attention for its catchy and unique substance\, and their live performances are known to be explosive and expressive. This will be Faust's first (and perhaps only) ever performance in Iowa\, and they will be joined by artists from our community for a one-of-a-kind\, collaborative performance/experience.

DESCRIPTION:Karen Meat and The Players is Des Moines’ favorite pop-punk band led by Arin Eaton. Eaton adopted the name Karen Meat when she relocated from Nashville to Des Moines\, and has been described as the “landlocked American cousin to ascendant Australian singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett.” Karen Meat’s latest project “Karen Meat and The Computer” was released in early 2015\, and features songs written by Patrick Tape Fleming of Gloom Balloon and Poison Control Center. The album’s sound is unapologetic\, gritty\, unrelentingly sweet\, and somehow manages to cover everything from dysfunctional relationships and negative body image issues to pizza and beer in just five songs.

DESCRIPTION:Caroline Smith was born and raised in Detroit Lakes\, Minnesota. She discovered her love for music at an early age\, learning how to play the guitar from her father. At 16\, she began performing locally.\n\nAt age 18 she moved to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota. She began performing weekly gigs at a local bar. Through various gigs playing these shows she was introduced to her future band mates\, Arlen Peiffer and Jesse Schuster. They later added David Earl to the group\, forming Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps. \n\nTogether they released three albums\, describing their sound as “storybook folk with an indie twist.” By “Little Wind” their last album under the name Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps their sound evolved into a more rocking sound still with folk elements and roots that they called it “post folk.” \n\nIn 2013 they released “Half About Being A Woman” under their new and simple name\, Caroline Smith. Many of the songs in the album draw influences from the 90’s neo soul explosion such as D’Angelo.\n

Born out of the local music-improv scene\, Boston-based four-piece Quilt absorbs these elements to collaborate on unconventional electric music\, spitting out mountains of sparkly psychedelic grooves and clouds of luminous three-part harmonies. Their live shows conjure a variety of reactions from the audience--from swaying blissfully to gentle folk ambience\, to nodding uncontrollably to thrashing guitar freak-outs--all seamlessly from song to song. Pitchfork says "Either they replicate specific moments in the history of 20th-century American music that we cannot concretely pin down\, or they are designed to reflect a set of unwritten expectations and parameters."

DESCRIPTION:Noveller is the solo electric guitar project of Brooklyn-based Sarah Lipstate\, who summons a surprising range of sounds out of a single instrument\, utilizing spellbinding loops and experimenting with manipulation. Her first two full-length records were released on No Fun Productions with help of sound artist Carlos Giffoni. Since then she has worked with labels Weird Forest\, Important Records\, and her own imprint Saffron Recordings. In 2014\, Lipstate announced her signing with Fire Records. Fire released Noveller's latest full-length 'Fantastic Planet' in January 2015 and subsequently her newest project Glacial Glow. Pitchfork described the sound of Fantastic Planet by saying "Lipstate contorts her guitar parts into shimmering bands of sound that recall Oneohtrix Point Never's early synthesizer explorations as often as they do fellow spaced-out six-stringers like Delicate Steve." Noveller has toured with St. Vincent\, Radiolab\, Xiu Xiu\, the Jesus Lizard\, U.S. Girls\, Aidan Baker\, and Emeralds. She has previously performed as a member of Cold Cave\, Parts & Labor\, and One Umbrella. Lipstate has also maintained a busy touring schedule with regular shows in New York as well as album tours and festival performances in the U.S. and Europe.

DESCRIPTION:Tyondai Braxton has been described by the Washington Post as “one of the most acclaimed experimental musicians of the last decade”. Braxton has been creating music as a solo artist and with various groups\, most notably his former band Battles\, since the ‘90s. In 2007\, Battles album Mirrors was listed as one of the year’s top ten albums by both Time and Pitchfork. As a solo artist\, In 2015\, Braxton released his first album in five years\, HIVE1\, and debuted it at the Guggenheim as a multimedia performance which included two modular synthesizers players and three percussionists on five large wooden pods. HIVE1 is a continuation of Braxton’s experimental orchestral with an unexpected electronic twist.

SUMMARY:Deer Tick "Acoustic" Tour
DESCRIPTION:John McCauley\, the songwriter behind Deer Tick \, spent his childhood in Rhode Island teaching himself to play the drums\, guitar\, piano\, and pedal steel. In high school\, he began recording his own compositions and touring the area. After graduation he expanded his tours throughout the country.\n\nAlthough McCauley performed primarily as a solo artist\, he soon added drummer Dennis Ryan to his group.\n\nDeer Tick began earning comparisons to Bright Eyes\, Modest Mouse\, and Uncle Tupelo after the release of their first album\, War Elephant\, in September of 2007.\nShortly after in 2009 and 2010\, the band released Born on Flag Day and The Black Dirt Sessions.\n\nTheir fourth album\, Divine Providence\, was rowdy and raucous\, heavily inspired by the styles of the Rolling Stones and the Stooges. Negativity\, their most recent album released in 2013\, revisits darker times including a wrenching breakup ballad.\n\nRachel Bailey of Paste Magazine reviewed Negativity pointing out that “their songwriting has improved as they’ve explored the not-so-good-times.”

SUMMARY:Dawn of Midi
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based acoustic trio Dawn of Midi consists of bassist Aakaash Israni\, pianist Amino Belyamani and drummer Qasim Naqvi\, who met as students playing late-night tennis at California Institute of the Arts. On the group's second album\, Dysnomia (written by Belyamani and Israni)\, Dawn of Midi utilizes sophisticated rhythmic structures from North and West African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves. The music sounds electronic\, but it’s performed live on acoustic instruments. Dysnomia was listed on Best Albums of 2013 by The New Yorker\, NPR Music\, and BBC Radio 3. Jad Abumrad did a short on Dawn of Midi on Radiolab\, uses their music occasionally to accompany stories on the show\, and described their sound as “sort of like ancient folk music\, filtered through highly obsessive computers that actually aren’t computers but people.” Pitchfork calls their music “totally unprecedented\,” and Rolling Stone said their sonic results are “brain-bending\, seemingly impossible.”

DESCRIPTION:Son Lux is the front for mastermind Ryan Lott. His adventures into pushing the boundaries of sonic wonderment are now legendary. His three full-length albums as Son Lux are At War With Walls and Mazes (2008)\, which earned NPR's Best New Artist distinction; We Are Rising (2011); and Lanterns (2013)\, which earned multiple year-end awards. Son Lux's EP Alternate Worlds (2014) features four tracks reworked from Lanterns\, including a collaboration with Lorde. Other collaborators include Sufjan Stevens\, Peter Silberman (The Antlers)\, and Richard Perry (Arcade Fire). Film production credits include work on four major feature films\, most notably Looper (2012) and the entire score for The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2014).\n\nSon Lux's newest release\, the dynamic\, dystopian-feeling Bones (2015) was released on Glassnote Records by the trio of Lott\, guitarist/composer Rafiq Bhatia\, and drummer Ian Chang. Bones received a high 7.2 rating from Pitchfork\, and NPR said of the album: “Bones' songs breathe and flow naturally as they hone and expand upon Son Lux's dense yet lilting electronic pop.”

SUMMARY:An Evening with Terry Zwigoff
DESCRIPTION:Born in Appleton\, Wisconsin\, Zwigoff held several jobs before making his breakthrough feature: the documentary Crumb (1994) in 1994. His previous jobs included musician\, shipping clerk\, printer and welfare office worker. In fact\, Zwigoff traces his film career back to discovering a rare blues recording by an unknown Chicago blues musician he discovered in 1978. The experience of the two years spent researching this artist\, a highly eccentric Howard Armstrong\, became Zwigoff's first film project\, a documentary titled Louie Bluie (1985) which premiered at Telluride and Sundance before it's theatrical run. Zwigoff's next project became the toast of the festival circuit in 1994. A documentary on the underground comic artist Robert Crumb\, "Crumb" won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance as well as citations from the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics and the Directors Guild of America. It also became the third highest grossing documentary of all time and was on over 150 Ten Best Lists by years end. However\, along with another 1994 documentary hopeful Hoop Dreams (1994)\, its failure to win even a nomination in the 1994 Academy Awards' Best Documentary Feature category caused an uproar that resulted in a demand to change the way the Academy voters choose the documentary feature nominees. "Crumb" chronicled Zwigoff's acquaintance of nearly two decades of Robert Crumb's life\, career\, the underground comic scene as well as Crumb's dysfunctional family. Even though it caused a momentary rift between the documentarian and the comic book artist\, it has been reported that they have reconciled and are currently collaborating on a screenplay called "The New Girlfriend".\n\nEven with the enormous success of "Crumb"\, Zwigoff refused to sell out to Hollywood. His aversion to corporate commercialism is a well-known trademark. He turned down many more commercial projects while he struggled for five years to make a feature film out of Daniel Clowes's underground comic strip "Ghost World". Released in 2001\, Ghost World (2001) became the summer art house hit and captured Golden Globe nominations for Steve Buscemi and Thora Birch\, who played the teenage protagonist Enid. "Ghost World" also brought acclaim for Zwigoff and his co-screenwriter Daniel Clowes\, a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in the 2002 Academy Awards. Ghost World wound up on over 150 Ten Best Lists for 2001.

SUMMARY:The Joy Formidable
DESCRIPTION:The demise of the English punk band Sidecar Kisses led to frontwoman Ritzy Bryan forming The Joy Formidable with bandmate and bassist Rhydian Dafydd. They relocated to London shortly after and added drummer Matt Thomas to the trio. Under the guitar and vocal leadership of Bryan\, the band started developing the noisey alt-rock sound that led to the release of the 8-track mini album A Balloon Called Moaning in 2009. Their reputation in the UK eventually had them touring with Passion Pit and later signing to Black Bell Records run by Ayad Al Adhamy.\n\nA Balloon Called Moaning was released stateside and the band released their full length debut The Big Roar in 2011. With heavy hitting singles “Whirring” and “A Heavy Abacus”\, the trio found themselves on tour with rock giants Muse through most of 2012. While on the road\, they wrote material for the sophomore release of Wolf’s Law continuing with the massive shoegaze sound that garnered the band’s early attention.

DESCRIPTION:Becca Rice's songwriting proves to be the focal point for much of what the indie-rock project Subatlantic aims to do. Rice (lead vocals\, guitar) and Adam Kaul (guitar\, banjo\, bass\, vocals) have been playing music together since the 1990s in their hometown of Fargo\, ND. After spending years studying\, working and playing music in England\, Ireland and Buffalo\, NY\, they settled in Rock Island\, IL where they met Phil Pracht (drums\, vocals) and Sean Chapman (guitar\, bass\, cello\, vocals). Subatlantic released Not louder\, but closer on May 28th of 2015. The project was recorded at The Horseshack in Rock Island.

DESCRIPTION:Named after Waxahatchee Creek\, Ala.\, lead singer/songwriter Katie Crutchfield formed the American indie band Waxahatchee in 2010. Then apart of P.S. Eliott\, Crutchfield released the first Waxahatchee split cassette while collaborating with Chris Clavin on Plan-It-X Records. Focusing on personal relationships and lust\, Crutchfield continued recording to release American Weekend\, followed by a move to Brooklyn\, NY\, in 2012. American Weekend received praise leading to Waxahatchee’s second album\, Cerulean Sea in March of 2013. With recognition from NPR and Pitchfork\, the band’s fame steadily increased which lead to an international tour supporting the music act of Tegan and Sara.\nAfter signing with Merge Records\, Crutchfield released Ivy Tripp in April of 2015. Soon followed by a headlining tour throughout North America\, the album received positive reviews noting the development of Crutchfield as a musician. Having played at the Pitchfork music festival in 2015\, and scheduled to play at Bonnaroo in 2016 - Waxahatchee continues to solidify an ever-growing fan base.

DESCRIPTION:San Fermin is a lush Brooklyn-based baroque pop band\, molded by the talented Ellis Ludwig-Leone after he graduated from Yale\, where he studied composition and assisted Nico Muhly\, a well-known contemporary classical music composer and arranger. The eight-member band received praise from NPR and Pitchfork after releasing their first album\, San Fermin\, which consisted of performances from 22 musicians\, and the National Association for Music Education named San Fermin the 2015 Stand for Music Award recipient. They have recently released a second album\, Jackrabbit\, which has been described by the Nashville Music Forum to “feel a lot like real life—charmed\, challenging\, and wonderfully compulsory\,” an evolutionary album in which all of the members at some point are prominently featured. The band has traveled all over the world\, playing sold-out shows and opening for prominent bands such as the National\, St. Vincent\, Arctic Monkeys\, and The Head and the Heart. With their blend of classical music\, pop\, and rock\, featuring wide-ranging lead vocals from Charlene Kaye and Allen Tate\, San Fermin’s live performances have been noted to deliver an emotional and epic experience.

DESCRIPTION:Esme Patterson is a singer/songwriter and founding member of Denver’s indie folk band Paper Bird. Esme grew up near Boulder\, Colorado\, listening to old R&B records with her sister Genevieve. They soon came to discover folk and Americana music. In 2006 two sisters collaborated with another sibling duo\, Mark and Sarah Anderson\, forming Paper Bird. The group found much success in the independent albums released. \n\nEsme occasionally performed solo\, but it was not until 2012 that she has accumulated songs that were not a good fit for Paper Bird. With influence from artists such as Van Morrison and Feist\, she began focusing on her first solo album\, All Princes\, I.\n\nHer most recent album “Women to Women” released in 2013\, focuses on responses from female characters in a broad range of well-known love songs. \n\nShe has performed as a backup singer for Tennis\, performing on The David Letterman Show and Jay Leno. She’s also been known for collaborating with Shakey Graves and Nathaniel Radcliffe.\n

Jones sets himself from other guitarists by his ability to tell a story through his music. In the ‘70s\, Jones discovered and mastered American Primitive guitar—a genre of music started by John Fahey who used traditional\, country blues fingerpicking on his avant-garde compositions. In 1989\, Jones founded experimental rock group Cul de Sac. In the 2000s\, Jones began focusing on solo projects\, most recently being 2013’s My Garden State\, his second album released with Chicago’s post-rock label Thrill Jockey.

DESCRIPTION:To hear Sarah Versprille and Daniel Hindman tell it\, their Portland\, Oregon based duo Pure Bathing Culture has always evolved naturally and at a steady pace. The roots of Pure Bathing Culture stretch back to 1999\, when Versprille and Hindman befriended one another on the first day of freshman orientation at William Patterson University in Wayne\, New Jersey. A decade later\, they became bandmates when they both joined Vetiver for their Sub-Pop albums Tight Knit and The Errant Charm. It was while playing in Vetiver that Pure Bathing Culture emerged as its own entity.\n\n \n\nRichard Swift produced the band’s first EP Moon Tides at his National Freedom studio in 2013. From there\, PBC evolved from simply being the product of Versprille and Hindman writing songs in their own home to hitting the road as a full touring band. Their follow up to Mood Tides led to producer John Congleton (St. Vincent\, Swans\, Angel Olsen\, The Walkmen) who  invited them to come record with him in Dallas. Pray for Rain was released in 2015.

DESCRIPTION:Pillar Point is the synth-pop indie project of Seattle\, Washington based musician Scott Reitherman. Wrapped in vintage synthesizers\, drum kits and dark slinking bass lines\, Pillar Point pulses with an organic heartbeat beneath a warm\, analog fabric. Reitherman broke off of indie-pop band Throw Me the Statue to release the self-titled debut LP in 2014 on Polyvinyl Records. The follow up to Pillar Point was the guest filled new wave dance record Marble Youth produced by Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes. The album includes drum appearances by Cameron Gardner of Washed Out and Phillip Mayer of Kishi Bashi creating a rhythmic whirlwind.

DESCRIPTION:There is no one definitive profession in the diverse career of New York native Saul Williams. While finishing his MFA in Acting at NYU’s Tisch School of Arts\, Williams had immersed himself in open-mic poetry\, earning a lead role in the 1998 film Slam. Around this time he had also been breaking ground in music. He released his debut album Amethyst Rock Star in 2001\, produced by Rick Rubin. Williams has performed in over 30 countries and read in over 300 universities\, with invitations that have spanned from the White House\, the Sydney Opera House\, Lincoln Center\, The Louvre\, The Getty Center\, Queen Elizabeth Hall\, to countless villages\, townships\, community centers\, and prisons across the world. In 2014\, he was the lead in the broadway musical Holler If Ya Hear Me\, inspired by the life and music of Tupac Shakur. Williams has released five studio albums and toured with artists such as Nine Inch Nails and The Mars Volta. His fifth studio album\, MartyrLoserKing\, due out in 2016\, follows a new world tour and to-be announced collaborations with several artists\, producers\, and writers.

Gary Wilson has continued making music in the years following his "disappearance." His music continues to chronicle his obsessions and angst that his followers would expect from him. His songs have been compared to everything from Prince to Talking Heads–bursting with electro-funk\, synth rock\, lounge\, soul\, and avant-garde jazz. DESCRIPTION:Co-Presented by SCOPE Productions\n\nKurt Vile realized his musical disposition at the young age of 14\, recording lo-fi cassettes of original slacker-pop-inspired material with a gifted banjo he’d wished was a guitar. The Philadelphian multi-instrumentalist picked up guitar and piano\, and at age 23\, began collaborating with singer/guitarist Adam Granduciel\, together forming indie rock outfit The War on Drugs. Vile amicably left the group in 2008 to pursue solo projects and has since released a steady stream of increasingly strong and well-received studio albums and EP’s\, most recently 2015’s b’lieve i’m goin down. On this folky\, new-wave offering\, Vile “really wanted it to sound like [playing] on [his] couch … more unguarded and vulnerable." Pitchfork praises the album’s lyric cohesiveness\, exclaiming\, “the quotable lines are many” and “humor was always part of his music\, but on b’lieve i’m goin down it’s an animating principle.” The Violators features Jesse Trbovich on guitars and bass guitar\, Rob Laakso on guitars\, bass guitar\, and keyboards\, and Kyle Spence on drums and percussion.
