Cascading harmonies and billowing textures, punchy rhythms and snarled guitars, wonderful depth and resplendent peaks. Born out of the local music-improv scene, Boston-based four-piece Quilt absorbs these elements to collaborate on unconventional electric music, spitting out mountains of sparkly psychedelic grooves and clouds of luminous three-part harmonies. Their live shows conjure a variety of reactions from the audience-from swaying blissfully to gentle folk ambience, to nodding uncontrollably to thrashing guitar freak-outs-all seamlessly from song to song. Pitchfork says “Either they replicate specific moments in the history of 20th-century American music that we cannot concretely pin down, or they are designed to reflect a set of unwritten expectations and parameters.”
