Preview: Gay Beast w/ Sewn Leather, Super Sonic Piss, and Cuticle (120)
It’s been a bit since the Glory Hole has hosted any festivities, but tonight the long wait is over. One of yours and my favorite basement venues brings it dance party-style! Detrivore label head Brenden O’Keefe kicks things off with his dance-infused act (which may or may not include former collaborator and new NYC resident Daren Ho) Cuticle (120). The addition of “(120)” to the band’s handle implies a slightly different direction, but as long as it kicks as much as the previous incarnation, no one’s going to complain.
Fresh from tearing it up at The Mill (of all places), Super Sonic Piss returns to a more accustomed climate, for their short, spastic, abrasive bursts of punk-sludge. (Apparently the boys are sporting new haircuts, and God only knows what that could entail.)
Adding to the list of tried and true favs we’ve got a couple soon-to-be favorites. Kansas City refugee Griffin brings his project Sewn Leather for the first of what will probably be many (many, many) Iowa City shows. This is some grimy, gritty, bass-heavy shit that is just as likely to give you nightmares as get your ass a shakin’. This is seriously going to be one of the better new Iowa City acts of ought-nine.
Rounding out the whole bill is the Minneapolis trio, Gay Beast. Gay Beast will keep the dance party rollin’ with their cacophony of new wave, dance-punk, free-jazz, spazzztastic tunes. Loud, nervous, and really, really fun; this is quintessential hipster dance music here.
As always, Glory Hole provides the sick jams, you provide the booze. Come prepared to dance the night away.
